A Front Loading MailBox
This mailbox project started when my employer asked me to make a replacement for our current store bought model. The current mailbox we have leaks during rain or snow storms.
Because we are subjected to extreme weather rain, snow, hot sun, and sub zero weather I wanted to create a mailbox where the lid is fixed and the mailbox itself stays protected except when you are retrieving your mail. This version is more suited for residential use because of the capacity. The tilt out drawer doesn’t even freeze shut with this design which has been a real bonus. The boss has been very happy with the new version and that’s what matters … customers are number 1
The front mail compartment rotates out to the open position on hinge pins. (See plan page 2) One of the biggest issues I discovered was keeping the drawer in place when it was in the closed position.I resolved this and provided a stop block at the same time by adding a row of magnets along the rear of the mailbox bottom and three metal screws with washers attached to the bottom of the rear drawer panel to connect with the magnets.
