168 Oblong Coffee Table with a Unique Base
This oblong coffee table has been on my honey-do list for some time now.
We wanted something unique, look good and practical. I required the table to be easy to construct yet appealing to the eye. This is what I came up with.
The table is basically 24” x 50” and ends up at 16” in height. The ¾” top of the table is almost oval which allows for easy access to the sofa. The top is beveled to make the top appear thinner than it really is. There is also a 1/8” inlay made from a contrasting wood species set in ¾” from the outside edge. This inlay is purely cosmetic and only needs to be added if you wish.
The legs, base and top supports are joined using a bridle joint. The large gluing surface on this type of joinery makes for a very strong connection point where you need it the most. If you have any reservations about strength you could easily pin the bridle joints. The curve on the base parts is also just for appearance but I think it adds a nice touch to the overall appearance.
If you decide to build this table or something similar be sure to have fun in the shop. Happy Woodworking!
