The basic multi-function shop cart plan came about out of a need in my own shop. Recently I have been working with some long boards and sheet goods. When jointing 9’ boards I needed an extra support on the outfeed side of the jointer. The jointer outfeed sits 32” off the floor. In addition, 4’ x 8’ sheets of any material are very cumbersome to handle by yourself when using the tablesaw. So I designed and build MF shop cart to give me a hand.
Any cart which sits on 4” castors is handy to have just as a cart. With the extension wings folded up it gives me a 24” x 50 ¼” moveable table for relocating boards around the shop. The small footprint (21 ½” x 26 ½” x 28 ¾” H) is easy to store when not in use. We all know how valuable shop space is!
The adjustable support arms will sit down flush with the top of the cart and extend up to a height of approximately 44 ¾”. So I can use it as a shop helper for in feed or outfeed when using the jointer, tablesaw or even the bandsaw. It’s amazing how some of the best ideas come out of necessity.
I can see where this little utility cart is going to be a great addition to the shop. Happy Woodworking!
