At the request of several members of the SCA organization I have designed a smaller (30” x 77”) version of the bed-in-a-box. The bed is designed to look like its big brothers plan #098 & #099 yet be made for a single user. A lot of the construction details are the same, especially the corner legs, however how the bed folds and converts into a bench are completely different. There is an independent headboard that is assembled and hangs on the end of the bed and a hinged cover that creates the lid or top of the bench. In the plans the slats are mounted 4 ¼” from the top of the side frame, however depending on what you are using for mattress material you may want to mount the slat rail higher or lower, which doesn’t affect the construction at all. Also the bed designed at 77” length so a single adult could use the bed as well as a child.
If you are constructing this for children only you could easily shorten the side rails and panel accordingly by up to two feet easily to save space and cut down on weight and the bed would still convert the same as the original.
