Memorial & Retirement Flag Cases
These two flag cases are presented for different occasions. The larger 5’ x 9’ or 9 1/2″ flags are normally used for memorial services while the 3’ x 5’ flags are presented for retirements and other special occasions. Either style of case could obviously be switched with the other depending on your needs. The details for the 5 x 9 case will be shown first and the 3 x 5 flag case will follow. The material list will show the components for each case.
Flag cases are designed using a standard formula (figure 2) so that when
folded properly will fit in their appropriate case.
The memorial case, sized to fit the 5 x 9 flag is a more elaborate project. It consists of two parts the upper display portion and a rectangular area below to display medals and awards. Both sections have matching round-overs which produces a nice shadow line and soften the overall appearance of the case. The top and bottom pieces are attached to each other with screws. The screws are hidden under the flag. There are two different miters angles in the top half of the case. All mitered corners are strengthened with the addition of splines. For a nice decorative touch you can make your splines with a contrasting wood. The spacing of the splines line up with each other between the upper and lower sections. This provides a great visual effect.
The lower half of the memorial case is another display case that compliments the upper portion. There is a mounting board within the box that sits at an angle so the medals, ribbons, awards are easy to see. The mounting board can be covered in a felt or similar material to provide a nice background for the hardware. Also the mounting board is easily removable. Most veterans or retirees want to be able to access the medals for special occasions like Remembrance Day or parades.
