I recently had a request from a friend, for a simple table to place their telephone on in their family room. The following is what we decided on. I didn’t think many people still had stationary phones but even if you don’t it would be a useful table in other areas of the home.
Simple clean lines, yet sturdy mortise and tenon joinery in a frame and panel design. The ½” panel tongues are wider than the grooves that they fit into leaving a rather unique shadow line around each of the panels. The legs are actually L-shaped and lock together with a 1/4” tongue and groove which saves having to purchase any 8/4 material.
The drawer is approximately 1/3 of the door height so it looks pleasing to the eye and follows the golden ratio in design. The drawers are on traditional wooden slides and fit flush to the cabinet front.
I am building this using pine to match the rest of their family room however any material would work for this simple design. The only hardwood is in the drawer box. If anything that will take the most abuse.
